Space Models and Maps for Google Earth

The Wirefly X PRIZE Cup is pleased to present an incredible collection of space related content for Google Earth. Google Earth is a free application available from Google which allows you to see a virtual globe of the Earth. Google Earth has thousands of satellite and aerial photographs for places all over the Earth and is a blast to use. It also has a 3D model of the terrain and maps of roads, country and state borders, cities, and towns. Google Earth is an educational tool, and a tool for entertaining self discovery about our beautiful planet.

Here is a brief overview of the content we have for Google Earth. We have a Space Atlas to locations for space centers, museums, rockets, launch sites, observatories, and more. We also have a map showing unique space-related places in New Mexico, the state where the X PRIZE Cup event is being held. We present interesting 3D Space Models developed by many people in the Google Earth Community. And finally, with support from Google, we have a 3D model of the X PRIZE Cup event and the Las Cruces Airport itself.

Here are links to each of the collections available:

Content from the 2006 Wirefly X PRIZE Cup For Google Earth

  • Live Web Cams - Two cameras were updated every 15 seconds that showed live views from a tower overlooking the event. The camera views are displayed in Google Earth right where they are located. Double click on each camera to see their views in the correct perspective. You can tilt your view in Google Earth to see what the landscape looks like. If you have already loaded the Wirefly X PRIZE Cup in 3D from above, make sure you deselect it so the models don't interfere with your view of the cameras. Please turn the cameras off when you are finished.
  • Aerial Photo - Taken at 3:15 PM - October 20, 2006 of the Wirefly X PRIZE Cup from an airplane flying overhead. This is the first time an aerial photo was taken, processed, and published on Google Earth on the same day. NOTE: Make sure you are using Google Earth 4.
